Since John and Denise Cole took over The Harcourt Arms in 1994 there has always been a strong Swedish connection to the pub thanks to the Swedish Church, Swedish Chambers of Commerce and the Swedish Embassy. Over the course of 1997-1998 The Harcourt Arms became a Swedish pub. TV boxes were installed to showcase a variety of Swedish sports and events to all Swedes in London.
Since we are tied to an English brewery that unfortunately doesn’t stock any Swedish draught beer, we started looking for alternative Swedish drinks that compliment the food that we offer such as Swedish meatballs served with mash and Lingonberry and Pytt i Panna.
Kopparberg Premium Cider was of course well known in Sweden at the time for being the world’s largest pear cider brand which today, is exported to over 30 countries worldwide including Finland, Ireland, Spain and the USA. Here in the UK, Kopparberg had only recently launched into the cider market and were growing distribution around key London areas with The Harcourt Arms being the first bar in the Marylebone area to stock the delicious, sweet cider.
The Kopparberg range in The Harcourt now includes Pear, Apple, Mixed Fruit, Elderflower & Lime and Strawberry & Lime with the brand now firmly established as one of The Harcourt’s bestselling products all year round.
From the beginning of 2000 Adnams Bitter had the front of the building cover with their logo, but from 2008 we removed the bitter from our stock and were hoping to find another company to renew the front of the building. Since we always had a good relationship with Kopparberg, we asked them if they were interested to make the “Swedish pub” in London even more Swedish.
Kopparberg was the perfect fit and in August 2010 we had some great new branding and signage and the work Kopparberg had done for us is really impressive and customers always comment on the work. If you haven’t seen the great design work that Kopparberg created in 2010, please come down and join the festivities…Swedish Style!
About Kopparberg Cider
Kopparberg, a range of semi-sweet premium ciders is fermented according to an original 1930 recipe in the family owned brewery in the small town of Kopparberg, Sweden. The key ingredient integral to all Kopparberg ciders is the unique ‘soft water’, sourced locally from the Kopparberg lakes and waters which has a low mineral content allowing the natural pure taste of the fruit to come through unaltered.
The Kopparberg brewery was established in 1882 when several small brewers in the Bergslagen region combined their expertise to build what is known locally as Kopparbergs Bryggeri. In the UK, Kopparberg continues to pioneer the development of the fruit cider category, first with the popular Mixed Fruit variant and more recently with Elderflower & Lime and the latest of the home favourites, Kopparberg with Strawberry & Lime.
